We are delighted to collaborate with the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) and the University of Sunderland in organising the Greek edition of the Fast Forward: Women in Photography Conference taking place in Thessaloniki from 17 to 19 May 2024, focusing on the theme of Hidden (Hi)stories: New Perspectives of Women’s Photographies.

Fast Forward: Women in Photography aims to explore the work and stories of women photographers, create opportunities and challenge the prevailing perceptions in the field of photography, paving the way for a meaningful new dialogue.

Reflecting on current issues of gender equality and justice, the conference aims to explore questions about identity, the freedom of women, those who identify as women and non-binary people, the (hi)stories of women in front of and behind the camera who are silenced or ignored by mainstream art history and institutions, women’s photographic creativity and much more.

Speakers

Keynote speakers include Françoise Vergès, political scientist, activist, and author of the book A Decolonial Feminism, who will take part in a discussion with art historian Angela Dimitrakaki and Alexandra Moschovi, Professor of Photography and Curating.

Contributions will also be made by Professor Anna Fox, photographer and Professor of Photography at the University for the Creative Arts; Rosy Martin, artist-photographer and psychological-therapist; David Bate, artist-photographer, writer and art historian; Helen McGhie, photographer, practice-based researcher and Senior Lecturer in Photography at the School of Digital Arts, Manchester Metropolitan University; and many more.

All presentations will take place in English and Greek (with simultaneous translation).

The conference is part of the 20th Thessaloniki International Book Fair programme of parallel events and coincides with the opening of the HerStories. Photographic Practices, 1974–2024 exhibition hosted at the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and the Experimental Center for the Arts of MOMus from 17 May to 15 September 2024.
