Date
Wednesday 20 November 2013 to Sunday 19 January 2014
Location
Benaki Museum (Pireos Street Annexe), Athens

For the third commission in the Artists in Dialogue series, renowned UK artist Adam Chodzko will install a collection of imaginary Benaki Museum exhibition posters from the near future.

Taking objects from the museum’s collections as a reference point, Chodzko has created fictitious posters advertising future exhibitions in unusual and surprising locations across Greece. In doing so, the artist reflects on the role of the museum in the representation of history, memory, knowledge and tradition, as well as on the conditions of viewing and the relationship between artistic production and the institutional space of its reception.

Chodzko is interested in challenging our perceptions and assumptions about who a museum might be for, and who defines the meaning and value of a nation’s culture and thus takes responsibility for preserving and promoting it. The seemingly bizarre and unexpected locations offer us a ‘museum of the future’ – one that reaches out beyond the museum’s walls, into the public arena.

You’ll see; this time it’ll be different has been specifically designed to be displayed in the space of the Pireos Annexe’s ramp and is accompanied by a video documenting the various 'private collectors' who have been custodians of these records of the museum’s activities.

Adam Chodzko lives and works in Whitstable, Kent, UK. He studied Art History at the University of Manchester and Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London. He has exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including exhibitions at the Tate Britain, Tate St Ives, Whitstable Biennale, Folkestone Triennial and the Museo d’Arte Moderna, Bologna.

Artist’s Talk – Adam Chodzko: You'll see; next time it'll be different

To complement the opening of Adam Chodzko’s new work, we invite you to join us for a lecture by the UK artist.

Chodzko will present a sequence of images and sounds with accompanying voice that contextualise his exhibition, You'll see; this time it'll be different. As a method of attempting to draw an audience into the appropriate space and time for the alternative reality represented in the work, Chodzko imagines a future where a visionary new culture can begin evolving only if art ends up in the ‘wrong' place.

With fascinating insight into the research process and archive materials chosen for his installation, the evening will present the theoretical framework of this exciting new commission.

Admission is free.
